London (KurdishMedia.com) 14 July 2008: A member of the PUK leadership, led by Jalal Talabani, insulted Kurdish journalists and describe them as “spies”, “dishonest to their country”, reported Kurdish independent weekly Hawlati on Monday.
Mahmud Sangawi, the member of the PUK leadership council, told one of the Hawlati’s journalists, Yadgar Rauf, that “journalists are lairs”. “You are spies and have no honour,” Sangawi told the journalist, according to Hawlati.
The very few independent media outlets are under great pressure from the two main Kurdish political groups, PUK and KDP. The media is chiefly controlled by the political groups, factions or individuals working within these groups. Independent journalists are still detained by laws legislated, to reduce freedom of speech, under the government of Saddam Hussein. Despite this the circulation and the sale of Hawlati is the highest in the region.
