Southern California, USA (KurdishMedia.com) 15 July 2008: According to still unconfirmed reports, Dr. Kamiar Alaei, a prominent physician, humanists, researcher, and public servant has been arrested by authorities in Tehran. He and his brother, Dr. Arash Alaei who might also have been arrested, had pioneered in helping the most disadvantaged patient population in their native city Kermashan, the largest Kurdish city in Iran.
According to a reference letter, Dr. Alaei had developed innovative clinical strategies to curtail the gap between detection and medical care of the HIV that causes AIDS. The influence of his original contributions has reached beyond the borders of his native country to public health circles around the globe. His original scientific contributions, such as Triangular Clinic Model, authorship of scholarly articles in professional journals, participation as a panelist or abstract reviewer in international conferences, employment or association in an essential capacity by organizations with a distinguished reputation, e.g., World Heath Organization, Harvard School of Public Health and the Ford Foundation are evidence of recognition of his expertise in the field.
Because of his medical expertise and dedication to his profession and his patients, the Kurdish Community of Southern California and contributing authors of KurdishMedia.com had invited Dr. Alaei for a talk in Orange County, California on November 29, 2006. Dr. Alaei presented a project titled "Triangular Clinic Model" on HIV patients. The project had been recognized as one of the best clinic models internationally.
In a discussion with the KurdishMedia.com authors, Dr. Alaei was challenged that oppressive regimes are not trustworthy and should be boycotted by every individual and society including the medical community. Dr. Alaei believed the people he is serving need his help. He was clever not to make a comment that might sound political or biased. He was admired by the participants in the discussion for his willingness to work under much harder circumstance than what we have become used to in the free world.
If Drs. Kamiar and Arash Alaei are under arrest, we hope they are released immediately so the public servants that work under oppression do not become more discouraged.
