Barzani rejects IHEC to supervise KRG Elections, Hawlati

London (KurdishMedia.com) 26 February 2009: The President of Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Massoud Barzani rejects the Iraqi Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC) to supervise KRG’s upcoming parliamentary elections in May, reported online Hawlati on Thursday.

KRG parliament member Awni Bazaz said, “President Massoud Barzani has expressed reservations on some of the items listed in the [regional] election law submitted to his office for approval.” Bazaz also said, “The major item in question is the involvement of the Iraqi Independent High Commission of Elections in Baghdad to supervise elections.” The regional commission must supervise elections per president Barzani requests.

IHEC concluded successful provincial elections in 14 provinces of Iraq in January 2009. Mr. Barzani’s rejection of IHEC to supervise KRG’s elections adds to sceptics over the integrity of elections.
