The Mayor of Sulaymanyah’s City dies in a security detention centre

Sulaymanyah, Kurdistan (KurdishMedia.com) 15 April 2012: The mayor of Sulaymanyah City, Mr Zana Hama Salih, dies in a Sulaymanyah Assaysh detention centre as he was investigated for corruption and nepotism charges against him. He was waiting for his trial.

Mr Salih was the Mayor of the City for several years and he was pronounced dead on Saturday 14th April in Sulaymanyah Assaysh prison while fighting corruption and nepotism changes brought against him by the local authorities in the city, controlled by the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), led by Jalal Talabani. Mr Salih was member of PUK for more than a decade.

The former Mayor was not charged and waiting for his trial. He was detained according to an article in the Iraqi penal code.

Mr Salih’s death has caused a series of reaction from his family and clan, the opposition political parties, PUK, Iraq’s President and the City’s officials, and his death is the dominant issue covered by Kurdish media outlets as well as being a talking point among the Kurdish society.

Unrelated to this dramatic event, two other bodies were found in Sulaymanyah on Saturday. One of the victims was beheaded with a knife and the other was drawn, reported by Sbeiy.com website. Reasons of their murder are unknown and investigation is underway, according to the local police office.

In the last few years a number of senior member of PUK have joint Gorran Political Movement and the PUK is suffering from internal struggle for power and prestige.
