The KRG must put aside a percentage of the Kurdistan’s yearly revenue to equip Kurdistan’s defence forces with advanced weaponry, while the rest of Iraq was still lagging behind militarily. Today, the Central Government of Iraq has purchased advanced fighting jets called the F-16s for the defence of Iraq. This is a bad news for the Kurds in many ways. The purchase of these fighting jets will give Iraqi army under Al-Maliki an upper hand in overcoming any Kurdish inspiration of an independent state. If today Al-Maliki purchases F-16s, tomorrow they will purchase even more advanced military equipments.

The Kurds must play their cards wisely. The KRG must ask Iraq to hand over a number of F-16s to Kurdistan. Just as the Iraq needs to patrol its borders so does Kurdistan. Kurdistan needs to patrol its borders with Iran and Turkey who constantly violate the aerospace and landscape of Kurdistan. In addition, the Iraqi government has purchased the F-16s on behalf of all Iraqis, not just the Arab dominated population.

If Iraq refuses to share the F-16s with the KRG then the Kurds must purchased their own in order to balance the power in the country. Nonetheless, the KRG must equip our defence forces with most advanced military “now”, while they still can. Tomorrow, things might change. The KRG must set aside a percentage of the Kurdistan revenue in order to supply the Kurdish defence forces. In addition, the KRG must enlist more citizens in active military duty and have military reserves as well.

Finally, let’s not forget the example of how Israel was created. As soon as Israel was created, she armed her defence forces to the teeth with the most advanced military equipment, which to this day has given Israel a military edge over her neighbours. The KRG must be ready militarily before it can even have an inspiration for an independent state.
